40 Years of Shaft!

Hot Peas and Butta celebrates the 40th Anniversary of one of the greatest black cinema films ever made, Shaft! That’s right this cool private eye dude turns 40 this week so we’ve decided to put together this short and sweet soundtrack mix from from the three Shaft films (all vinyl of course).

Coffee Table Status (SP12 Edition)

This morning while out tending to my perfectly manicured lawn with the hedges trimmed like a fresh from the barber shop hi top fade the postman made his usual rounds of dropping off mail and of course a stack of the usual packages of records and such. One box that was not familiar I opened first and to my surprise the contents held the new book based on the SP-1200 "The Art and The Science". Not sure who sent me this but thank you, you must've known that I've been down with EMU pre SP1200 when I got my hands on the OG SP12 with the 5 1/4 floppy which I still have to this day.

Bite This!

If you read back a few months then you'll know when it comes to horror films of the 60's and 70's hands down my vote goes to England's Hammer Films. They made the best Vampire films, had the best actors like Peter Cushing and Vincent Price and lets not even speak about the beautiful woman like Ingrid Pitt that played a major roll in biting and being bitten. Titan Merchandising is releasing these great busts of characters that would look proper on your shelves.

Christopher Lee as Dracula, Peter Cushing as Van Helsing and Ingrid Pitt as the sexy/blood-bathing/sexily blood-bathing Elizabeth Bathory from Countess Dracula.

One Great Sleuth

One of the greatest sleuth's (Detective for you non mystery types) and television icon has passed away today, Pete Falk aka Columbo. Columbo was one of my favorite detective shows of all time that I used to watch as a kid. He was always snooping around, being a problem and always barking up the wrong tree but he always solved the case. He wasn't a clean cut Magnum P.I. type of guy but more of the wrinkled care free cigar smoking detective with a very unforgettable personality.

Taste of The Nation

This past Monday I had the pleasure of DJing the Taste of Nation event which is a big deal. Taste of the Nation is an annual event where some of the top restaurants have booths and do sample tastings to raise funds to fight child hunger. I was set up in the Plymouth Gin area which was designed to look like a club but on a smaller scale and the sound traveled throughout the entire event. I got to spin alot of goodness from House to Latin, Jazz and more. If at all possible try to make it out to next years event, it's for a good cause.

Four Wheelin'

While in Quebec you know I had to do a little shopping for records and other stuff and came across this store that had tons of model cars. I'm not really the car type of guy even though my vintage train collection is official I'm sure my ATL homie Shecky would have had a field day in here.

Oh Canada

It's not often that I make it to Canada but when I do it's always a great time. I had the opportunity to rock the IBE Qualifiers in Quebec this weekend, enjoy some great foods, hit record stores and enjoy the crisp fresh air. Quebec City is very beautiful with really nice homes, very busy downtown area which is the center for all the hip restaurants, cool people and upscale lounges.

Cool Collabo

When it comes to clothing collaborations I usually hate them because they two companies usually have no connection what so ever. A Bathing Ape is one of those rare brands that will collab with someone else and really make it cool and work. Bape's Nigo is a huge toy collector (among other things) so his upcoming collaboration and doing an Optimus Prime Transformer really hit a homerun and has up'd the ante when doing this collaborations. He'll be doing a run of T shirts with their signature look to accompany this figure also. Nigo is still a genius in my book!

The Bape x Transformers Collection will be released July 29th. Take a look at it in more detail after the jump.

3 Times Dope

This past weekend the homie DJ Tony Touch came to Philly to spin at the Sundae party so I had to link up and check him out. Shortly after I arrived fellow Rock Steady DJ Rich Medina walked through the door as well.

Future Hunt

I'm always on the hunt for the rarity that exists like the Black Dynamite poster that was only given out to certain people so when something similar comes along I'm on the never ending quest to have it.

Artist Paolo Rivera was commissioned to create a special poster as a gift for the Captain America movie’s cast and crew. This poster captures the essence of the World War II era posters and he did a great job of keeping it official.

"The prints, limited to 100 or so, were reproduced at actual size. I was given access to a vast collection of production stills—each emblazoned with a watermark pattern of my name from which I selected my favorites. All of the lettering is hand-drawn, with the exception of the small credits at the top and bottom (I ran out of steam). While I did some post-production work in Photoshop, the original looks more or less like what you see here."

I'll probably have to wait until one of the cast members hit's hard times and wants to sell to get my hands on one but who knows, everything pops up at an auction for sale sooner or later.

Printed Matter

One of the necessary things that I always need to do before jumping on long flights is make a pre boarding stop to the bookstore for some reading material. But over the last few years I've noticed that pickings have become slim with finding good magazines with quality content to keep me occupied while flying the friendly skies. There's tons of garbage out there but nothing that I would want to spend my $5.99 on only to throw away once I land. I really miss the days of independent magazines, DIY newsletters and Zines which you could find without even trying but with the cost of printing higher and advertisers being selective the little guy is left to work with a minimal budget.

While going through some boxes today I pulled out some classic graff magazines from the early 90's that was easily obtainable at your local Hip Hop shop or Tower Records. Seeing some of the photo's really takes me back to the good days.

I'm sitting on a ton of these rare gems that fetch a pretty penny on the market, if you can find them.

The Weekends Here

I finally had a rare full weekend off that I didn't have anything in particular to do except enjoy my weekend. Saturday was all about heading out to some of my favorite spots to dig for comic books and records plus a great burger while Sunday was all about getting an early morning start to hit the record show in Philly.

Blade.....Animated!

First look at the upcoming Anime series for Blade. The Japanese teaser trailer is floating around online but doesn't give anything away. I'm really hoping that since the Japanese are doing it that it's really raw and not made for TV. Hopefully 2012 will provide us with great animated action from the likes of Cartoon Networks Black Dynamite and Marvel's Blade.

Super Soul Sister

I wish Marvel Comics would have kept this version of Ms. Marvel in there books.
