Black Dynamite has left the building....

Last nights Black Dynamite Sound Orchestra show in New York was amazing! I didn't realize that impact that they have made on the music scene with their sound and style. The house was packed for the occassion and to start things off I did my first of two sets for the evening dropping all things funky. Pics will be up soon so I'll be sure to put a link up for you to check the photography of my homie Mikey Mcfly. Here's a few from my camera in the meantime.

Afro Funke

There's a few DJ's that I always support and have mad respect for especially when the music pours out of their souls when their spinning. One DJ that brings that to any party is my cousin Ervin Arana from Rock Steady Crew and The Root Down Sound in L.A. He's the special guest DJ at the upcoming Afro Funke party in L.A. so if your around peep my homie out.

Rare Finds

Nothing like taking a Sunday afternoon to check out something a little different than the usual weekend stomps. Going to go check out the Renoir exhibit at the Philadelphia Art Museum. I've gone twice in the last two years, once to see the Dali exhibit and the other the Freda exhibit. Prior to that, the last time I was there was in elementary school.

Water Front

Full sail ahead!

Healthy Living

I received an email from one of my readers the other day that said if I keep eating burgers like I do that I'll eventually turn into a cow. So I responded with, all these burgers keep me looking young, but just because I don't blog about eating healthy doesn't mean I don't. So for dinner tonight I had a nice cobb salad with shrimp, some fresh baked bread, mozzarella, prosciutto and tasty cold beverage.

Go'n off in Helsinki Finland

We're about to take our New York City party, The Go Off across the ocean to Helsinki Finland. As a special guest DJ we've got Helsinki's own and world famous DJ Anonymous. If you know Anonymous then you know this guys got insane records of all genres. I first had the chance to spin with him a few years back at the grand opening of one of Helsinkis newest clubs, Redrum.

Hot Peas and Butta summer funky bbq's continue next week with two special guest DJ's that pride themselves in having some extra heavy 45's. Forest Getemgump (Big City Records) and Pablo (Boogiemen / Lost & Found)join your residents Skeme Richards and DJ Amir on another episode of HP&B. And of course there will be free bbq, cheap drinks and rare footage showing on the projector.

Catch me loungin' on the islands

I'm finally making my way out to Hawaii to rock a couple of gigs. Mighty 4 Hawaii is priority for this 4th of July weekend though. It'll be good to link up with me peeps Paulskee, Jus Joness, Froy and East 3.

Nice piece on the history of the Boombox.

Live on stage with Black Dynamite!

You've seen Black Dynamite haven't you? You've heard the soundtrack right? Well this Saturday Adrian Younge and The Black Dynamite Sound Orchestra will be performing live in New York City and I'll be the opening DJ for both the 7pm and 10pm shows. Take my advice, if you haven't seen or heard them perform then this is something that is well worth your money to see!

Gourmet at home.

So after a long day out and about yesterday I knew there was no chance of me stepping back out to grab a bite to eat. So instead it was time to try making the gourmet burger in my own kitchen. A little grilled onions, some greens and bacon. One word, DELICIOUS!

The Master of all killers

The Gordon Liu trilogy exhibition at my private gallery is almost done, one more and it'll be a wrap. Picked up another piece from the frame store yesterday that I've been wanting to get done for a while now. Slowly I'm taking down some older ones from my walls and replacing with new ones, hopefully I'll change every season to give me something fresh to look at.

No doubt...holla at me.

Was going thru an old business card holder (yes business card holder, seems like everything is digital now). And I found a gang of old cards from the late 80's early 90's during my time of trooping to New York shopping demos, going to parties and meetings, hanging out in studio sessions and then swing back to Philly to be at work by 8am. Those were the days! Here's a few cards that I came across.

The label that signed Showbiz & AG, Jeru and other dope artists.

Swimming with the fish.

I've been thinking a lot lately about putting a really fly salt water aquarium in the crib and after today's excursion to the Camden Waterfront Aquarium I'm really giving it serious thought.

Now thats a tasty beer.

The first time that I tried Dog Fish Head beer was on a trip out to L.A. for the Hot Peas and Butta x Funky Sole party. While staying at my boy Mixxxie's crib (who happens to be a beer connesieur) he introduced Elroy Jenkins and myself the a few different selections include the Dog Fish Head. I've only had it a few times since then but it looks like their doing something special for the 40th Anniversary of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew.

The perfect liquid accompaniment to Miles Davis?

Perhaps not perfect, but inspired nonetheless, Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head has brewed up something special for the 40th anniversary of Bitches Brew. At 9% ABV, the beer fuses an imperial stout with a thread honey beer laced with gesho root. Made for slow sipping, it also works as an accompaniment to spicy meals.

Its all in the cover

First look at the upcoming release for the Skeme Richards Presents: Hot Peas and Butta Band 7" being released July 27th on the Record Breakin label. As the day nears a little closer we'll unscramble the image a little bit more.

Deadly Duo Burger mission

So if you've been reading my blog for some time then you know the burger quest that I'm on originally started back in 2005 with Deadly Duo partner Ynot RSC. Well this past Thursday while in New York we reunited for a classic burger session before partying in El Barrio at the All White Summer Blowout. After reviewing the menu we went with the El Barrio burger which was insanely good. The beef had a nice texture to it, was perfectly cooked medium well and very juicy and as always a good burger never needs ketchup! The bun wasn't the standard burger bun but instead something different which I really couldn't put my finger on what made it so. The side of fries topped the burger of perfectly and salted just the right amount.

This past Thursday night I was invited to rock a set in NYC with my peeps Crazy Legs RSC and DJ Nire. The event theme was an all white summer party playing the best in Funk & Soul, House, R&B and Salsa. So me and my homie Mikey Mcfly jumped in the vehicle and made the trip up. The party was incredible as I expected plus I got to see a few peeps that I have caught up with in a while like Tony Touch, Blaze and my burger partner Ynot. The one thing that I can say about this party was that it felt like New York!

One for the walls

Just got back in from picking up one of my pieces from being framed. Been wanting to get this done for a minute now so it's finally done. I think I'm gonna do a Master Killer trilogy on the wall consisting of 3 Gordon Liu Chia-Hui 1-sheets.

BBQ Season

I know I've been slipping with updates lately but I've been overwhelmed and exhausted with all sorts of things, but we'll touch on that later.

This past Sunday marked the first of four Hot Peas and Butta Sunday BBQ's in Brooklyn. I must say that it was the perfect day with the perfect group of people enjoying the music, drinking, eating BBQ and playing dominos. Shouts to everyone that came thru. Next month we'll do it again and stay tuned for the special guest DJ's that will be blessing you all summer long!

Here's a few picks, the rest will be up shortly on the Hot Peas site. www.hotpeasandbutta.com
