Nice With The Mic Device

Nice with the beats, check.  The rhymes? check.  Cuts? check.  Last week my partner in rhyme (yes we do that as well) were digging thru the archives of tracks we recorded some years back just for the hell of it and decided yeah, it's time to step back in the lab again.  It's been a minute but once you have it, you never lose it so back to the beats and rhymes again once we get a free moment.  We recorded much material between 2000 and 2006 but here's a few we pulled out.

Black Westerns

Really digging this new track and video by The Bullitts "They Die By Dawn" featuring vocals by Yasiin Bey (Mos Def), Jay Electronica and Lucy Liu.  The cinematic Western treatment that it was given is so on point especially with guest appearances from Michael K Williams, Rosario Dawson, Erykah Badu and others.  Looking forward to the full short film and album to drop soon, the only thing else it would need would be a Tarantino re-edit with extra blood.

Beautiful Genova Italy

Amazing time this past weekend in Genova Italy for the Feel The Beat! event and to link up with a few people like my sister Leva57 and fellow Philosopher, Storm.  Genova is a beautiful place with amazing sites, great people and perfect black sand beaches.  The view from my hotel rooftop deck was amazing with a panoramic view for miles.

Kareem, One of The Greatest of All Time.

I'm out here in Thun Switzerland talking sneaker talk with my Rock Steady Crew fam, Jazzy Jes and EZ Mike who are diehard Adidas lovers and the conversation comes up about vintage Adidas and my favorites of all time.  One of the pairs that are in my Top 5 are the Kareem Abdul Jabbar's low top or hi top.  I remember when these first dropped back in the early 80's I got my first pair of white with blue stripes and my little girl friend at the time had the same pair with yellow stripes, brings back so many memories.  Not only did I love his shoe but he was one of my favorite players even before he was on the Lakers.  Anyway, I came across these 2 videos of this guy who has 2 mint pairs, still looks as fresh as the day the came out. I always loved the pair with his face on the tongue over the Skyhook tongue.

First Friday at North Bowl

In two weeks North Bowl will host First Friday "The Late Edition" with the Masthead Invasion as Masthead Print Studio takes over the walls of North Bowl while I handle the musical duties.  This should be an amazing night so hopefully we'll see you there!

Red Bull BC One Vegas

Last weekend I had the opportunity to DJ the Red Bull BC One event in Las Vegas.  It was great to be able to DJ outdoors on Freemont Street which gave it a totally different feel and energy from other ones that I've spun.  This view is from the DJ booth starting from the left to right side.

Flashing Lights

When it comes to old school casino and carnival lights I get into straight big kid mode when I see them.  It's something about the design of the letters, the way the bulbs flicker, the vintage and nostalgic appeal that it has.  Neon signs are wack and have no appeal or design aesthetic to them what so ever.  Las Vegas is the home of these signs which I will make it my mission on the next trip out to go to the Neon Museum which is an outdoor museum that has all of the old giant signs.  I've always wanted to start collecting a few of these so maybe in the future when I get some prime space I'll indulge into that hobby.

We The People Exhibit

Before traveling to Las Vegas this past weekend there was a photo exhibit in the Philadelphia airport that I hadn't paid attention to before.  The exhibit was called "We The People" and had tons of black & white photography of people that changed things in America including Muhammad Ali and Jackie Robinson.

Slow Down Baby!

I definitely ride out with Action Bronson, this dude is hands down lyrically better than all your favorite rappers out right now and even those trying to make comebacks but falling short.  Time to fill the trunk with the Bazooka tubes, Alpine deck and 6 disc changer because this 90's Jeep anthem is just whats needed in the sad state of Hip Hop right now.

Leading Ladies

While in Vegas yesterday DJing for the Red Bull BC One event I had a little free time in my schedule to have lunch with two of my favorite Hollywood actresses and my biggest fans, Lana Woods aka Plenty o' Toole from the James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever and Ms. Gloria Hendry from the Blaxploitation classics Black Belt Jones, Black Caesar and the James Bond Film Live and Let Die.

By DJ's

You know when a club is owned by DJ's because the sound system is amazing, the DJ booth is spacious and you see signs like this.  Club owners take note!

Nuff said

World's Famous

Last weekend while with Cros1 in D.C. I had the opportunity to eat at the historical landmark known as Ben's Chili Bowl.  I gotta say that the service is probably the friendliest that I've ever experienced in any restaurant and maybe even any customer service based retail outlet in general.  I wasn't expecting much, after all it's just a Chili, Hot Dog, Burger, Fries type of spot but the food was rather good and the jukebox had a better selection then most of the DJs you hear spinning at the clubs.  Everything from A Tribe Called Quest to Archie Bell "Tighten Up" to Easy E, 3 songs for $1.00 sounds like money well spent.

Take You To, Moneytown!

Last nights Moneytown party in DC was another sure shot.  I always love rocking at Little Miss Whiskey's Golden Dollar with the homie DJ Nitekrawler because the DJ's, the vibe, the records, the staff and the venue are so appreciated by the people its amazing.  Everyone always comes prepared to sweat, dance and straight let lets for the night.  I have to give the extra special shout to my Philly homegirl Deesh who came through to let loose.  Definitely looking forward to the next DC return trip and even possibly hosting Nitekrawler here in Philly because dude has an incredible selection of records.  Until next time DC, stay funky!
