Adjust Your Tracking

If you know me then you know that I (along with a gazillion other people) are avid collectors of films and footage on VHS.  Now I know your saying to yourself but it's on DVD and thats true, but just like with the vinyl vs CD debate, to a collector, Vinyl is valued and worth more and also more rare than CD's (which eventually become unplayable).  With VHS, yes your collecting for the movie itself, but your also collecting because of it's rarity, box art, company that produced the film and also the fact that it's never been released to DVD.  There's so many rare footage that you'll only find on this format, weather pre recorded or recorded from television in the 80's and never seen again, VHS is still my goto format of choice.

Looks like there's a new documentary titled Adjust Your Tracking: The Untold Story of the VHS Collector which I'm really excited to see as I'm sure fellow collectors are as well.  I don't expect people to go out and buy VCR's (yes they are still being made) but for all the collectors around the world this definitely looks like a must see.

Photos x Records

Someone's always snapping pictures.  While in Montreal Canada looking for records and enjoying burgers, the homie Bertrand decided that he would document some of what was going on.

Cope 2 x Crash in Montreal

On a recent trip to cold Montreal Canada I had a little down time so I decided to check out a gallery that had several Cope 2 and Crash pieces on display.  Everyone should own art, but if you are "Hip Hop" then you should at least own something from those who bring creativity visually to our culture.

Adrian Younge x Ghostface Killah

Great to see the homie Adrian Younge and his collaboration with the Wu Tang Clans Ghostface Killah finally come to light.  This is definitely a dream collabo that was put together and very well orchestrated
especially with the Italian cinematic and soundtrack touches with the video and entire concept in general.  The album is a definite must have!

A Cinephile's Labyrinth

I've always been a person that enjoys hitting shops of all kinds, weather it be records, books and magazines and yes, the video store.  It's for obvious reasons, the connection with other people who appreciate and have the same interests as you.  There's something to be said about that lack of interaction of ordering online even though it's convenient you still don't get that human communication factor.  Here's a video of Michel Gondry visiting one of his favorite local video stores.

Destination Izmir Turkey

Great times this past weekend in Izmir Turkey and this might have just made it into my top 5 places to visit.  Izmir is definitely a beautiful place, with great people and such an "old" neighborhood vibe the mom and pop restaurants lining the streets, corners stores everywhere to buy your snacks and newspapers.  And of course the food was awesome and some of the freshest, hand made, well prepared that I've ever had.  They really take pride in how they serve their dishes, even the dough for the pita bread is flattened and rolled right there.  All and all it was a great experience and definitely look forward to a return visit soon.

Turkish Blaxploitation

To be an artist and have "fans" around the world is a great feeling, but to be an artist and have "fam" (family) around the world is another thing.  I've never been one to call those who appreciate what I do as fans, I've always considered them as family especially those who have the utmost appreciation for the things that I'm into outside of DJing.  The people that get to know Skeme Richards as the collector, the Nostalgia King, the guy who is into all sorts of cool shit.  From time to time when traveling people often approach me and ask me questions about those said things that I'm into because they find it interesting.  Other times people already know and understand and gift me with things that they know I'll appreciate.  Last week in Izmir Turkey I was approached by a local who greeted and welcomed me to Turkey and then proceeded to tell me that he brought me something.  Low and behold it was a Turkish Blaxploitation poster for the movie Three Tough Guys... Word! Now that's love right there.  In addition he also laced me with the ill Turkish Funk 7" complete with a nasty break on it.

It's amazing to travel the world and be greeted with gifts of this nature, let's me know that what I do and portray is really being seen by the world, more than just being a DJ but as a lover of art and culture.

Amsterdam Burger Quest

While on a recent trip to Holland I satisfied my burger craving by sampling what has been rated as Amsterdam's #1 Burger Spot, The Butcher.  This burger spot was recommend by the homie Menno of the Legends Party a few weeks prior so as soon as I had a break in my schedule it was time to meet up with Rob Manga and Jurskee to see why it was rated so high.  Now I've had burgers all around the world but I have to say that this now fits in my top 5 burgers of all time.  The bun was a perfect 10 out of 10, the beef was super on point, great texture, season just right, cooked on open flames and had barely any grease, yet the perfect amount of juice.  I definitely wasn't expecting it to be this good.  Top it off with steak fries and homemade milk shake and we've got a winner.

Soul Flexin'

Later this month I'll be heading out to one of my favorite West Coast parties, Soul Flexin' in San Diego. This go around Supreme La Rock and myself will be rocking with residents Charlie Rock, Question and Marsellus Wallace.  As always, this night is strictly vinyl so you know where bringing out the gems and crown jewels.

Red Bull BC One Philly Edition

Yes sir, BC One finally hits Philly and I'll be DJing the main event along with my partner in crime, Crazy Legs (Rock Steady Crew).  It all goes down at Philly's most legendary and longest running Hip Hop event, The Gathering which has been showcasing DJ's, MC's, Graff Artists and Bboy's while other events forgot about most of the elements.

What's Your Style?

Many of you guys (and gals) have inquired where I get my Kung Fu film inspired t-shirts from that you see me wearing during my gigs.  Well the answer is from Shaolin Chamber 36 and it's apart of their 36 Styles line of goods that feature many of the main characters of 70's Martial Arts films that are loved so much by cinema aficionados.  They've just re-uped their stock with a few pieces that sold out in they're initial run and have also added new colorways as well.

Summer is right around the corner so you'll need something fresh.

Spring 2013 Tour Dates

Thoroughly enjoyed my 6 week Winter European tour and definitely happy to be home to sleep in my own bed but I gotta keep it moving.  Here are the dates from my upcoming Spring tour.

Keeping It Funky In Switzerland

One of the many (and favorite) stops during my 6 week European tour was DJing at the "Real Funk" party in Zurich with the homies Spruzzi and Funky Gramigna.  It's always a blast spinning here and it's always a packed house filled with people enjoy the sounds of Funk & Soul tunes at 45rpm.  DJing with these two gents is always so much fun because they've got some of the best records out of anyone that I know, they're not "famous" nor have they been featured on any of these "digger" shows.  DJing with like minded music lovers beats DJing with the "famous" guy who recently became a 45 guy and only knows the typical breaks and samples but can't rock a party with.

Dubai, The City Made of It All

Had an amazing few days away from my home in Amsterdam while traveling to Dubai for a gig,  shouts to the homie Tamer for putting things together and making it happen.  Was an amazing opportunity to rock music outdoors at the Dubai Marina Club during the day and at night with great people enjoying the festivities.  There's definitely something to be said about rocking under the stars and bright lights of the towering buildings above.  I was really impressed with their structures and how each high rise is unique and I guess they love the Empire State Building so much that they built 2 of them there.  Too much to go into deal with because I'm mad tired after getting off this flight from Izmir Turkey but here's a photo recap, I'm sure you get the point.
