Shirt Off My Back

One of the perks of traveling is of course getting alot of promo merchandise, t-shirts, kicks, music etc. Majority of the times most of those giveaways aren't worth packing in your luggage for the return flight home but every once in a while your handed that gem that you know will get put to good use. While in San Diego last week the homie Cros1 swung through and handed me a couple of T's but the one in particular that really caught my eye is the "Don't Bite" T. This one is gonna get mad burn from me especially today for the 34th Anniversary of Rock Steady Crew.

Cros1's company The Armory has a solid line of t-shirts and other wears so if your in San Diego stop by the store, if not then hit them up online to browse and purchase.

Pop Art

I've always loved Roy Litchenstein art, maybe it's the comic book style that he used when creating his masterpieces. While out in San Diego I ran across this van that was completely painted in a Litchenstein theme which was kind of weird but hey, "Anything Goes" I guess.

The Captain and Olly

Limited edition posters done by none other than artist Olly Moss, once again he nailed it!

Got That Jimmy Ruckus

By now you should already know of Big Pimp Jones aka the Hot Peas and Butta band also known as Jimmy Ruckus right? Of course you own their vinyl from Record Breakin Music and Freestyle records but do you own this?! While in San Diego this past weekend BPJ band member Keith dropped swung by the Soul Flexin anniversary party after his appearance at San Diego Comic Con to drop of this (as of now) limited edition bottle of Jimmy Ruckus Lager brew. Word on the Soul Train says that it will be available on another limited release some time in the near future.

We're Heading To Seattle

Hot Peas and Butta is heading to Seattle once again to link up with those insane record guys from DUG! That's right, the double bill double feature returns to Lo-Fi next Friday to deliver that all vinyl 45 goodness.

Weekly Goodness Roundup

This last past weekend was hectic, stressful and fun all at the same but that story will come later. There's been a few cool things that have popped up worthy of talking about and even displaying on your shelf, here's this weeks cool shit.

I could care less about any DJ or Rapper that has a liquor sponsor and/or signature bottle that's not even worth the price of admission or will ever go up in value or is only marketed to a select demographic (ie. pick your brands better). But Hennessy has teamed up with artist KAWS for this limited edition collaboration of V.S. Cognac. If you know KAWS then you know his stock in the collectors world and his highly desirable pieces that will keep you on the hunt for a long time. Even those that don't drink will try to cop a bottle of this Cognac.

In celebration of its 15th anniversary, Medicom Toy has designed this special edition Mickey Mouse figurine. Based off the classic 1937 episode entitled “As The Worm Turns”, the toy depicts a a gloved Mickey wearing a lab coat and mixing up a very special concoction. Priced at ¥7,140 JPY (approximately $90 USD), the toy will be available for purchase at the Medicom Toy 15th Anniversary Exhibition in Tokyo from July 30 through August 22.

Supa Genius status right here, this is what I feel like when in the lab creating.

It's been a minute since I did a really good "Coffee Table Status" on a hardback book but it looks like new book publisher Rizzoli has something new in the works, Gucci: The Making of Book by author Maria Luisa Frisa. The book is an unprecedented publication showcasing Gucci as never before, including thought-provoking essays, commentaries, and authoritative anecdotes along with previously unpublished contemporary and archival photographs.

The Dragon Still Lives

Today marks the anniversary and passing of the greatest to ever do it, Lee Jun-fan known to the world as Bruce Lee (November 27, 1940 – July 20 1973). Bruce Lee's presence is still being felt worldwide in all shapes and forms but the one thing that does not sit well with me is the exploitation and how he has become the "cool" person that everyone who never mentioned him before now says that he inspired them and how everyone seems to quote lines from him now that true fans have quoted for 40+ years. Many people only know him for his movies while others go deeper and know him for much more including his philosophy, teachings, training, beliefs and more.

I am by far not the most complete fan of the dragon but have been a fan of him since the 70's and have collected a large amount of memorabilia since my childhood including books, magazines, posters, lobby cards, figures and more.

Below are a few of the rare magazines that I have collected and stashed away but there are about 4 more that I am still searching for to make the collection complete.

"There are major prophets and minor prophets, I believe that Bruce Lee is a major prophet" - The RZA (Wu Tang Clan)

Rotterdam Diggin

While out in Rotterdam I got to do a little shopping for a some gems, I would say diggin but records wasn't my only hunt. In true Hot Peas and Butta fashion I was on the search for everything.

First order of business once I landed was to hit Demonfuzz Records for a few beats. They weren't open yet so the homie Tyrone made the call to tell them that I was in town and within 10 mins the alakazam, the doors were open. 4 Hours and a couple hundred euros later it was time to get back to the hotel and take a shower after the long 8 hour flight.

While there of course I saw a few other things that I needed to have one being this Super Action Man poster which I already have the identical US poster but it's called Black Shampoo. I knew this was just for display and was the owners personal piece but you know me everything has a price, one phone call and 5 minutes later the price was on the table.

While out on Saturday afternoon attending the Street Science festival which is an indoor event with vendors, art displays, stages with performers and more there was a comic shop connected to the side entrance so of course I had to hit them to see what they had. And of course it was filled with not only comics, but vintage movie posters and toys.

Saw this 1977 Star Wars insert poster that I had been trying to find for a decent price and there it was with a nice pricetag.

The store had only been open for a week but they had a nice selection of back issues and classic Savage Sword of Conan's, Deadly Hands of Kung Fu and MAD.

If I could've gotten this giant framed Christopher Lee piece (from the Hammer Horror Dracula Films) on the plane with me I definitely would have made them an offer for it.

The City of Rotterdam

Had a great time this past weekend in Rotterdam, the food, the people and atmosphere was a very pleasurable experience. I'm definitely looking forward to making a return trip there soon, minus the rain.

Return of The Barbarian

When it comes to new films and remakes of old films being released quality is at a minimum, but when it comes to films being made for the adult market and not the typical summer blockbuster all ages super hero business its even less. So when I saw the trailer for the new Conan The Barbarian movie how raw and gory its was plus a rating of Rated R I was even more pleased, but seeing the movie poster with sheer violence and blood splattering brought a smile to my face.

Imagery Is Everything

Two flicks that I'm actually excited to see in the theaters when they drop, The Dark Knight Rises and The Thing. Even though The Thing was already done by John Carpenter and I don't usually approve of remakes / re-tellings (ie. Planet of Apes etc.) they did a great job on the movie poster which has a classic look so hopefully the film will be just as good.

Exclusive!!

If it's one San Diego Comic Con Exclusive that I need to walk away with this year it's this!

As you should know by now, Return of the Jedi was originally going to be titled Revenge of the Jedi. Lucas decided that Jedis are too enlightened to take revenge and he changed the name accordingly (apparently, taking revenge is bad, but sitting around all day discussing bullshit and/or making friends with Chewbacca for no goddamned good reason is perfectly fine). Anyways, what this means to SDCC attendees is that they will be able to buy 14 of Hasbro's vintage Star Wars figures -- including the otherwise uncarded Salacious Crumb and Mouse Droid -- in special Revenge of the Jedi blister cards. These all come in a massive cardboard Death Star that, if you don't want it utterly destroyed, you should probably have professionally shipped to your home.

It's me and the Biz

As Jay-Z said, first of all I'd like to thank my connect! For hooking me up with this limited edition Biz Markie Pro-Ked 69ers. Nuff said.

In an "Instant"

I'm sure you've heard of the term in an instant right?! Well that's exactly how my homie Mr. Beon gets down when he's snapping photos for me. This past weekend at our Brooklyn BBQ he pulled out what might be an unusual object to some but not to those who hold the title photographer, his Instax camera. In common terms it's known as a Polaroid, yes he shoots digital as well and has the Canon and the Nikon cameras like everyone else but he also still shoots film (dictionary term: He's a Photographer). Here's a few snaps from the party.

Second Sundays! BBQ Kick off

Had a great time yesterday in Brooklyn for the kick off of Second Sundays and it was a perfect day of 45's on the decks, beverages, bbq and great people. I couldn't have asked for a better turnout of people, especially since I was already packed indoors and out. Shouts to everyone that came out, see you next moth!
